I'm Fine, Mom
Dear concerned parents and family,
This has been an interesting week, for three reasons.
First: In each Church we go to, there is someone who is assigned to help us do missionary work in the area, known as a Ward Mission Leader. One of ours is named Robert Doty, and he worked for SpaceX for 4 and a half years as a recovery engineer for the landing rockets. He invited us over for dinner the other day and showed us all of the cool space stuff he has, including pieces of several rockets that made it into space and then exploded when they attempted to land. He has tons of videos of failed rockets, and the explosions are glorious. He says you can find the videos online, so I recommend looking them up. Also, if you watched when they launched the cars into space, he was in charge of the console, so his voice is the one you hear in the video when it launches.
Second: Houston weather is extremely bipolar. We were out walking on a really hot day with a blue sky. Next thing we knew, it dropped about 25 degrees and we were caught in a crazy storm where the rain was going completely sideways, so we had to hold our umbrella in front of us. Then, two days later we looked up at the sky to see what was basically a hurricane approaching us, when the weather forecast had said nothing about that. We had our bikes that day, so we started peddling as fast as we could back to the apartment, which was of course heading into the storm. We were mostly just feeling light sprinkles, and then it turned into straight up hurricane weather in one second. I couldn't see anything with all the rain and even though we were only in that rain for a bit, we were completely drenched when we reached the apartment.
Third: We met a 39 year old drug addict. We were knocking on doors when he answered and said come on in. So we went in and he told us literally his entire life story. We were there for like and hour and a half. He had been in jail for ten years of his life (we don't know what for) and came from a super rich family. He had just gotten down from a five day meth high right before we knocked, so he was very interesting. He cried like crazy, got mad at us for being there, was happy that we were there, and scared that we were there. He wants to be a better person and get all of this stuff out of his life, so he feels it was a sign from God that we came when we did. Anyways, he hated us and loved us at the same time, and both of us just tried to get out of there without setting him off as fast as we could.
So yeah, those were the more interesting parts of the week, the third being the most. It was a normal week other than that. We've got some stuff we're working on, but I'll let y'all know about that next week when we see how that turns out.
Love,
Elder Garner
