AP Physics With Prof Garner
Hey there Delilah,
What's it like in New York City?
But seriously, is anything new happening in NYC? I haven't been for awhile and I know quite few of y'all live around there, so don't leave me hanging.
Anyways, this week was good! We were very busy with lessons and meetings, so I've got a good amount to share this week.
As Newton's third law teaches us, every action has an equal but opposite reaction, which describes a lot of this week. I mean that in the best way, because everything pretty much balanced itself out.
For example: We taught a lesson with a couple and it went well! We had a really good discussion on different interpretations of scripture and how we can use words of Prophets to help us understand. The equal and opposite reaction, however, was that we learned at the end of the lesson that the husband was leaving town and wasn't going to be back until the end of October! That means that both Elder Lindsay and I will probably never see them again. That's okay, though, because they have a bunch of friends in the ward who will make sure missionaries meet with them in the future.
Now in contrast to that, we had a meeting for all of the missionaries who have only been out for 8 weeks, and I did not enjoy it. Pretty much for the whole thing us newbies had to roleplay lessons on different missionaries who were training, and I kept treating it like a test worrying about the right answers the whole time. The reaction: although while there I didn't enjoy it, I learned a lot about the importance of what you feel you should say instead of what you think you should say. In other words, teach from the heart.
There are several other examples for both of these throughout the week. We had a good lesson with a family, but there was also a lot of talking in circles. We were stood up for a lesson we set up, but instead met a really nice Army recruiter who we'll be teaching this week. We had a long day where it was really hot and no one talked to us, but some members let us in and gave us some food and laughs.
In summation: everything that happened this week had some sort of negative and some sort of positive. I'd be lying if I said the whole week I looked only at the positive, but I did focus on what I gained instead of what I lost. I'm finally catching on to that in life. You don't have a good life because there are no negatives, you have one by looking past those and getting something positive out of everything.
Well, that's the bell, class is over. Hope y'all enjoyed my little lecture. I miss all of you but I'm glad I'm here.
Love,
Elder Garner
